Sports Betting and Online Casino Helps Growth of Danish Revenue

As it was stated in the official report issued by the Danish Gambling Authority, also known as, Spillemyndigheden, gross gaming revenue in Denmark grew 5.7% during 2018, to DKK9.74 billion ($1.46 billion).

It looks like the 2018 Fifa World Cup had a lot to do with this boost, because the 2017 total was DKK520 million, while in 2018 the revenue came up to DKK9.22 billion.

More Details on the Numbers

When it comes to the revenue coming from sports betting only, it rose to DKK2.53 billion last year, while the revenue was at DKK2.33 billion in 2017…

…and it represents 26% of total gaming revenue for the year.

For sure, the revenue was at its highest during the months of June and July, because of the World Cup. In June, it came to DKK245 million, while in July it was at DKK246 million.

In 2018, there was also a 19.5% increase in online casino revenue from DKK1.81 billion to DKK2.16 billion.

This form of gambling represents 22% of the whole Danish regulated market in 2018.

The Danish Lotteries

Danish Gambling Authority revealed that lotteries, including charity lottery games, are still the biggest source of gambling income in Denmark.

It represents 31% of the country’s gambling market and the revenue from this type of gambling rose 6.6% compared to the numbers from 2017.

In 2018, this sector amassed DKK3.11 billion, while in 2017 the same sector gathered DKK2.30 billion.

The games that contributed the most were Joker and EuroJackpot because they gathered DKK2.33 billion in revenue…

…while class lotteries were a lot less popular and got DKK413 million in revenue.

Scratch cards contributed DKK248m in revenue, while keno generated DKK£31m.

Online Gaming Activities

Spillemyndigheden reported the increase in online gaming activities. They noted that there was a decline in land-based revenue, which means that online gambling is now responsible for 54.5% of all gambling revenue in Denmark, compared to 51.5% in 2017.

Mobile was the most popular platform for online gaming customers. By the fourth quarter of the year, mobile held 52.4% of the online market, compared to 49.2% in the first quarter of the year.

Spillemyndigheden Blocked Access to 25 Sites

The Danish Online Gambling Regulator made an official announcement to the public that they have decided to block access to 25 unlicensed gaming websites.

This gambling authority collaborated with the country’s telecommunications and internet service providers on blocking the Danish customers from gaining access to 10 online gambling websites and 15 skin betting sites.

Spillemyndigheden’s proposition to use strict measures against providers that didn’t respect the Danish rules was approved by the Copenhagen City Court.

“We use our authority to block websites on an ongoing basis. We do this to protect the gaming providers who are actually authorised to offer games in Denmark, but also to protect the players,“ Spillemyndigheden director, Birgitten Sand, explained.

“Here we are focusing in particular on sites that offer skin betting, as they often target children and adolescents under the age of 18,” she added.
