Ernie Stevens Jr. has secured his 13th consecutive term as Chairman of the Indian Gaming Association (IGA) after being re-elected by acclamation. Running unopposed, Stevens received unanimous backing from tribal leadership, reaffirming their trust in his continued guidance. His long-standing tenure has been marked by efforts to strengthen tribal sovereignty and advance Indian gaming, a sector that has grown significantly under his leadership.

Commitment to Tribal Gaming and Sovereignty

Following his re-election, Stevens expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing confidence placed in him by tribal leaders.

“From day one of my Chairmanship, my commitment has been unwavering—my work is my campaign, always inspired and guided by our tribal leadership,” Stevens stated.

He further emphasized his dedication, saying, “For 24 years, I have remained steadfast, and I will not unpack my bags for the next two years either. Together, we will advance our proactive agenda and unite Indian Country to defend tribal sovereignty at all costs. I have pledged to work tirelessly—morning, noon, and night—to champion our interests in tribal government gaming. I am honored to be your messenger, amplifying the voices of our elected tribal officials with pride and purpose.”

Under Stevens’ leadership, the Indian Gaming Association has maintained a proactive stance in addressing key policy matters, ensuring that tribal sovereignty remains a priority at both state and federal levels. His advocacy efforts have been instrumental in securing legislative for tribal gaming enterprises, helping to sustain and expand economic opportunities for Native communities.

Growth of Indian Gaming Under Stevens’ Leadership

Since Stevens first took office, Indian gaming revenue has expanded dramatically, increasing from $11 billion in 2000 to over $49.1 billion in 2024. This growth has positioned tribal gaming as the leading sector within the U.S. gaming industry. Across its casinos and resorts, tribal gaming s approximately 800,000 jobs, making it a crucial economic driver for Native communities.

The election took place during the 2025 Indian Gaming Tradeshow and Convention in San Diego, California. This event, a key gathering for industry stakeholders, coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Indian Gaming Association. Stevens highlighted the organization’s role in advocating for Indian Country, shaping policies, and strengthening the industry’s foundation over the past four decades.

A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

In addition to his role at the IGA, Stevens has built a distinguished career in tribal leadership. He previously served as an elected councilman for the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin from 1993 to 1999 and held the position of first vice president at the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI).

His influence extends beyond the gaming industry, as he currently sits on several boards, including the Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED), the Nike N7 Foundation, the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY), and the Native American Advisory Board for the Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA).

His tenure has also seen significant efforts toward fostering economic development initiatives, ing tribal businesses, and ensuring that gaming revenues contribute to essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Stevens has been a key figure in defending the rights of tribal governments to regulate their own gaming operations, reinforcing the autonomy of Native nations in economic and legislative matters.

With his re-election, Stevens continues to lead the Indian Gaming Association in its mission to protect tribal sovereignty, enhance economic opportunities, and strengthen the presence of Native enterprises within the broader gaming industry.
