April Brings Strong Revenue Gains for Massachusetts Gambling Sector

Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), the month produced approximately $102.12 million in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) from land-based casinos and $65.94 million in taxable sports wagering revenue (TSWR) from both online and retail operators.

Casino Gaming Revenue Sees Modest Yearly Increase

Plainridge Park Casino (PPC), MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor collectively generated over $102 million in GGR, a 4.7% increase compared to April 2024, though slightly below the $105.2 million recorded in March. Slot machines were the biggest contributor, ing for $71.1 million, while table games produced around $31 million.

Encore Boston Harbor led all properties with $63.5 million in revenue, followed by MGM Springfield at $23.5 million and PPC with $15.1 million.

Tax contributions from casino revenue totaled approximately $26.2 million for the month.

Sports Betting Revenue Surges Year-on-Year

Sports wagering in April reflected substantial annual growth. Of the total revenue, online sportsbooks ed for $65.5 million, while retail operations contributed $486,828. The overall hold stood at 9.55% for the month. DraftKings maintained its lead as the top online sportsbook in the state. It generated $38.6 million in revenue from a $343 million handle, representing an 11.26% hold. FanDuel followed with $18.4 million on $185.9 million in bets, while BetMGM posted $4.1 million from a $55.1 million handle.

Other notable performers included Fanatics Sportsbook with $3.2 million on $49.3 million and ESPN Bet, which recorded $1.9 million in revenue from $21.7 million. Caesars logged the lowest hold among major operators at just 3.56% from a $21.1 million handle.

Retail Betting Shows Mixed Results

Retail betting handle totaled $9.7 million in April, an 8.5% decline from March. Encore Boston Harbor led among physical sportsbooks, handling $4.9 million and retaining 7.8% in revenue. PPC processed $3.1 million in wagers but posted only a 3.9% hold. MGM Springfield handled $1.6 million but reported no revenue.

Operators’ TSWR is taxed at 15% for retail and 20% for online platforms. Tax revenue from sports betting for the month amounted to $13.2 million, bringing the state’s total tax and assessment collections from wagering since early 2023 to $267.6 million.

Revenue from all legal gambling activities in April yielded $42.3 million in state tax income. The funds are distributed across several programs, including the General Fund, Workforce Investment Trust Fund, Public Health Trust Fund, Gaming Local Aid Fund, and Youth Development and Achievement Fund.
