Spillemyndigheden, the Danish gambling regulator, has revealed that access to 25 gaming websites was obstructed. This comes as a part of its efforts and strategy to eradicate illegal activity in the country in 2019.
In close collaboration with the Danish Tax Authority, the regulator investigated 502 sites. Looking ahead, the country’s regulator pledged to continue its searches in partnership with this institution. By carrying on examination of sites, they will be able to spot more unlawful activities.
Following the investigation, ten platforms were found to be operating illegally in Denmark, prompting the regulator to file court petitions to have internet service providers halt access to these pages. These cases are all expected to conclude later this year.
In 2018, the scope of the search was expanded…
…to encom skin betting as well. Out of 110 platforms reviewed during 2019, there were close investigations for 6 of them. Altogether, 15 petitions were filed to have ISPs block access to websites.
However, for land-based gambling, the Gaming Act indicates that it does not have any jurisdiction over illegal activities regarding this field. But, if the need arises, the regulator may assist the Danish police when and where required. This saw it provide input on 19 cases in which entertainment hubs offered poker or slot machines without certification.
Last year the regulator began an education campaign, targeting minors and their parents. The aim was to inform participants on what skin betting actually was, but why it was illegal. According to the regulator, these campaigns were well-received.
These measures appear to be having a positive impact…
… on efforts to channel players towards legal gambling offerings. As far as outlined in the research conducted by H2GC, the regulator said an estimated 91.54% of gambling spend occurred through legal platforms. This marked a significant increase from 72.44% in 2012, the year Denmark’s iGaming market opened for business, and is expected to rise to 93.01% in 2020.
As for 2019, the stats show that this particular sector delivered total revenue was DKK 6.57 billion (around $951.9 million), which represents a 1.8% increase over the previous year.
The final month of the previous year brought quite a surprising course of events. Finnish online gambling platform, Finnplay was granted an online casino license to operate in the country.
Almost at the same time…
…EveryMatrix decided to deactivate its four white-label brands. However, the developer will keep on supplying the market and its operators with a fully licensed and reliable platform along with software solutions.
