Fewer Number of Alderney Gambling Commission Licenses Issued in 2019

Alderney Gambling Commission has reported that the number of gambling operators and related businesses that have submitted an application for the gambling license in this jurisdiction has declined from 2018’s 53 to just 33 during 2019.

The annual report published by the regulator revealed that in total six new licenses have been issued and renewed 27. In 2018, eight licenses were issued as new.

Fewer of Everything

Supplier and their subsidiaries such as Inspired Entertainment, International Game Technology and SG Digital’s NYX Gaming, as well as Genting and Cashbet are among those whose licensed lapsed during this period.

There were also 23 complaints against some of the licensees during 2019…

…which is, again, a decline from 2018’s 39. The complaints were dealt without the hearing. The Alderney Commission carried out 33 inspections of licensees’ business during 2019 and, as was said in the official statement: “These [inspections] demonstrated a high level of regulatory compliance by licensees and reaffirmed the importance of active operational controls.”

The Commission did not sanction any operators and didn’t carry out any business investigations during 2019. There were 88 instances of remedial measures that related to compliance with anti-money laundering or terrorism financial controls.

License Fees Revenue

The Commission took in GBP 4 million through annual license fees…

…which is less than 18.7% than in 2018. Also, the regulator made GBP 589,648 through fees charged to clients, which is also a decline of 4.7%. The only increase came in bank interest segment which rose 27.7%.

The overall revenue came to GBP 4.6 million, which is 17.1% less than in 2018.

The overall expenses grew 4.5%. The regulator has paid GBP 1.8 million in staff costs, which is 3.1% up from 2018. istrative expenses rose 8.1% to GBP 198,218, while web hosting costs skyrocketed 107.8% to GBP 183,649.

Alderney Gambling Commission chair, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, remarked on the decline in licenses and income and said that he is an optimist for the future:

“Whilst 2019 was not without its challenges we look forward, and not back, to playing our part in this developing industry.”
