September 27, 2018 Christopher Hohenstein
August was the seminal month for the state of Mississippi. New opportunities for public funding – AND entertainment – arose with the regulation of sports betting…
…As it went live on August 1st, the first month of legalized sports wagering is already behind us. There is good news regarding this, and even better news still to come as state’s betting scene begins to thrive.
In August, Mississippi’s total amount of sports wagers was $6.3 million. $77,000 was nabbed in tax income for the state and casinos’ income is said to be around $644,000…
…And it’s worth noting that numbers could have been considerably higher if more companies began their operations on day 1 – in fact, only MGM in Churchill Downs was live with sports betting on Aug 1st.
Besides them, Scientific Games) was also accepting sports wagers last month.
As more operators began their services in September, with some of them set to take off still, this month should prove to be even more lucrative in Mississippi. SBTech launched sports betting at the beginning of the month…
…And betting giant, William Hill, inked an agreement as well, which is set to begin soon, after teaming up with Eldorado. IGT will launch their own sportsbook immediately, also.
In August, baseball was the most popular sport with punters, as it attracted $3.3 million in bets. $1.4m was wagered on parlay betting and $1.3m on American football.
Of course, Mississippi’s total financial success cannot be compared to that of $95.6 million in August – more than a double…
…However, unlike New Jersey, Mississippi had to work with fewer operators. Also, they do not have a market open for online or mobile sports betting like that of NJ.
