Hard Rock International has been planning to launch a Spanish casino venue for a while. After several extensions, it seems that the project will undergo an additional prolongation of three months.
Local government in the Catalan region has just approved a three-month extension for the license granted last year for the Hard Rock Entertainment World project close to the city of Tarragona. This extension comes after a recently extended period of six months which expired this past Thursday. According to Spanish media reports, the decision was made at HRI’s request. The company believes that it can find a solution for land ownership problems and go on with the €2b casino project.
Hard Rock looks to obtain land which is now in La Caixa bank hands. However, the previous owners of the property believe that they didn’t get a fair price. As a result, they are prepared to conduct legal action and obtain additional payment for the land.
Hard Rock has already invested about €5.5 million to secure its place in the Spanish market. However, it needs to invest even more funds to keep the project in its hands. The operator now looks to secure legal issues regarding the land below the future complex. Another problem for HRI is pressure from environmental activists who want to prevent the project from realization.
Spain has been looking to commence several casino projects over the previous years. However, it hasn’t taken any additional step towards construction. Las Vegas Sands expressed interest in building the EuroVegas resort close to Madrid, but pulled back when the local government prohibited policies regarding indoor smoking.
Another operator who has been looking to develop a casino in Spain is Cordish Gaming. The company was interested in the construction of a leading Madrid gaming venue but dropped due to tax problems and land use. US company, Cora Alpha, has also expressed interest to start its $3.5b complex in Spain’s Extremadura area. The firm unveiled its draft policy regarding the project but no further steps have been revealed. With HRI intentions, we can get a completely new casino venue that will have positive impressions on customers.
