Indiana Gaming Commission Reports Record Sports Betting Handle in December

The figures revealed by the Indiana Gaming Commission have shown that this US state has had a very good December – best ever, in fact, when it comes to the amount of money people have wagered on sports.

The revenue from sports betting has also doubled on annual level: the adjusted GGR for December 2020 was $24.3 million, which is up 102.5% from 12 million in December 2019. However, the November 2020 revenue remains the best ever – $25.3 million.

In December…

…Indiana players have wagered a total of $313.1 million, 93.5% more than in December the year prior. This is also an increase compared to November 2020 – 24.5% – which was a previous monthly record of $251.4 million.

The state took $2.3 million in taxes from sports betting in December, which is more than double they collected in December 2019.

Football was the most popular sport for sports wagering among the consumers, with a total of $101.8 million during the month. Basketball came second with $89.7 million in bets, and baseball came third.

The Pecking Order

As far as individual operators go…

…Blue Chip Casino that uses FanDuel sportsbook has led the market in revenue. They generated $7.3 million from $80.1 million in bets.

DraftKings sportsbook-powered Penn National Gaming’s Ameristar Casino, which was the previous market leader, came second with $6.9 million in sports betting revenue from $125 million handle.

Lawrenceburg’s Penn National Hollywood Casino was the next most successful operator with $3.3 million in revenue from $23.4 million in bets. Then came Belterra Casino which runs a BetMGM sportsbook.

Horseshoe Hammond was the only other casino to see revenue sur $1m in revenue, with this reaching $1.4m off a handle of $9.3m for the month.

A Project On Hold

A casino project planned for Terre Haute in Indiana was cancelled and put on hold last year, following an investigation.

The Indiana Gaming Commission has decided to cancel a licensing hearing and has hired a former FBI agent to help with the review after someone from Spectacle Entertainment, the operating company, “didn’t follow the rules.”
