Macau has been fighting against illegal online gambling for a while. However, most of the attempts to eliminate it were not satisfying and officials are looking for an efficient strategy to deal with illegal gaming. Director of Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Paulo Martins Chan, is aware of the present situation and he promises much effort to remedy the matter.
Commenting on the illegal gaming at 2019 MGS Entertainment Show, DICJ Director, Chan, said:
“What we can is to do propaganda to raise awareness and inform that it is illegal […] We continue to do a lot of awareness work, sending phone messages, setting billboards, to fight online gaming. It has a great impact on Macau’s image and in many times involves fraud.”
Chan has pointed out resources that have been invested in the prevention of illegal operations. He proposed that operators should look for advertising and inspection of unallowed sites while promoting legal gambling options. The DICJ director noticed that Macau operators can set up the server outside of the country which puts local forces in an even harder position to fight with frauds. One of the possible ways to restrict illegal providers is looking to attract customers and keep their attention before the illegal actors do the same.
During the 2019 MGS Entertainment Show, Chan has also spoken about additional issues in the city including metal detectors in gambling areas, and coordination with police activities. Macau recorded tremendous success by fulfilling 40 technical compliance recommendations requested from the Financial Action Task Force and become the first Asian territory that achieved to complete the milestone. It will guarantee the nation to remain one of the leading and most consistent operational sites.
Chan also talked about gambling addiction problems. He said:
“Since 2017, the local responsible gambling agencies ed by the DICJ have completed responsible gambling seminars in tertiary institutions in five cities in the Mainland. In the current year, the DICJ also sent staff to Hong Kong and two gambling counseling service centers to exchange the responsible gambling policy of Macao and introduce the self-exclusion application service.”
Meanwhile, we can expect to see results of Macau’s activity. As a reminder, DICJ has recently implemented policy on the protection of customers’ data, aiming to ensure a better gambling environment for local players.
