MGM Grand Holds Market Leadership While Others Lag

Breaking down the revenue distribution, MGM Grand Detroit remained the clear market leader, securing 47% of the city’s casino revenue. MotorCity Casino followed with 30%, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown ed for the remaining 23%. These figures underscore MGM Grand’s steady dominance in the local gambling market.

When comparing April’s revenue to previous periods, a nuanced picture emerges. Overall, revenue from table games and slots decreased by 6.3% compared to March 2025, although there was a modest 1.5% increase year-over-year. Despite the sector-wide dip, MGM Grand Detroit posted a 2.5% revenue increase, totaling $51.1 million. MotorCity Casino also saw a small rise of 1.2%, reaching $33.1 million. Conversely, Hollywood Casino experienced a slight decline of 0.2%, closing April with $25.3 million.

In of taxation, Detroit’s casinos contributed $8.9 million to the state treasury and paid another $13.0 million in taxes and development agreements to the City of Detroit in April, continuing to play a significant role in local government revenues.

Sports Betting Declines Sharply Amid Struggles

The outlook for retail sports betting was notably less positive. The report revealed a dramatic 79.8% year-over-year drop in quarterly adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) for sports wagering, accompanied by a 44.6% decrease from March 2025 figures. MGM Grand Detroit’s sports betting segment recorded a negative result of $219,857, reflecting losses in this area. MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown managed to post positive gains, though these were significantly below expectations.

Tax contributions from sports betting were minimal in April, with $20,276 remitted to the state and roughly $24,781 paid to the city, reflecting the weakened betting activity.

Fantasy Contests Provide Some Bright Spots

An additional area of wagering, fantasy contests, showed promise in March 2025. Operators in this segment earned a combined profit of $634,191 and fulfilled their tax obligations by paying $53,272 in taxes. This suggests a growing but still limited niche within Detroit’s broader gaming ecosystem.

Overall, Detroit’s gambling industry in April 2025 presented a complex mix of results, marked by resilience in traditional casino gaming alongside sharp declines in sports betting. The varied performance illustrates ongoing shifts in consumer behavior and market dynamics within the city’s evolving betting landscape.
