Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer, has recently signed legislation that approves internet gambling and sports betting operations. One month after the announcement, Michigan Gaming Control Board spokesman, Mary Kay Bean, said that the state will wait until 2021 to introduce online wagers. However, customers will have the opportunity to enjoy betting from land-based casinos starting from this spring.
According to the spokesman’s words, the state needs about a year to finalize the legislation process and to introduce sports betting possibility in 3 casinos around Detroit and 24 tribal venues. The same timeframe will be at disposal for online gambling and daily fantasy sports sites. Commenting on the legalization of onsite sports wagering in Detroit, Bean said:
“We are at a very early stage of this process. The agency must establish several sets of istrative rules, which through many levels of review. The timing of implementation depends not only on our agency but also on decisions other departments, agencies, and the Legislature make along the way.”
Following sports betting authorization plans, MGM Grand Detroit kicked off a $6 million sports bar which will offer betting windows and self-service kiosks for interested players.
On this occasion, Bean said:
“Timing will depend on how quickly we receive applications, can approve the casinos’ internal controls and are able to issue required licenses.”
Michigan Gaming Control Board spokesman also mentioned that board is not connected with in-person sports betting at the tribal casinos in Michigan. Despite this situation, tribes can obtain a license for mobile sports wagering while platform operators and other providers cooperating with the tribes will need a license.
One of the candidates for sports betting license in Saginaw Chippewa Gaming Enterprises which currently holds two venues in Mount Pleasant and one in Standish. According to the words of the company’s CEO, Mike Bean, he expects to move “relatively quickly” to obtain approval for onsite sports wagering. He further believes that sports betting activity could start in two or three months. Bean plans to feature sports betting possibility to all three venues while keeping up with state deadlines. However, mobile betting options will only be ready in a year.
Bean added:
“We view sports betting as another nice entity that will drive more people to our property. Online wagers will be an option for those who cannot travel there. Our biggest question right now is when is it all going to be ready?”
Meanwhile, some US analysts estimate that 90% of sports betting activity will be managed on mobile phones or the internet over the next 5 or 10 years. One of the US states, which comes as a living proof of that, is New Jersey which handles 80% of all sports bets on the internet.
