Michigan residents without proper authorization.
According to the MGCB, these operators are in direct violation of the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act, and the Michigan Penal Code. The regulatory body has asserted that such platforms jeopardize consumer safety by failing to provide adequate withdrawal options and necessary protections for players.
“These illegal platforms not only violate Michigan’s gaming regulations but also put consumers at risk by offering unreliable withdrawal options and lacking essential consumer protections,” stated MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “Our top priority is safeguarding Michigan residents by ensuring that all online gaming activities are conducted legally and safely. These operators must stop their activities or face additional legal consequences.”
The MGCB’s investigation revealed that these offshore casinos offer a range of gambling options, including slots, poker, blackjack, keno, bingo, and game show-style games, as well as sports betting. Additionally, they permit transactions using various payment methods, such as credit and debit cards, PayPal, and cryptocurrencies. However, players are often subjected to stringent wagering requirements, forcing them to bet multiple times before they can withdraw winnings.
Under Michigan law, unauthorized online gambling is prohibited. The Lawful Internet Gaming Act mandates that only licensed operators may offer online casino gaming in the state. The Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act classifies illegal gambling as a felony offense, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison, fines up to $100,000, or both. The Michigan Penal Code also broadly bans gambling operations that involve payment, prizes, and elements of chance.
The MGCB has made it clear that offshore operators ignoring state regulations will not be tolerated. The cease-and-desist letters give these operators a 14-day deadline to cease offering services to Michigan players. Should they fail to comply, the MGCB has stated that it will collaborate with the state Attorney General’s Office to pursue further legal action.
Michigan has recently taken one of the most aggressive approaches among regulated states in cracking down on unauthorized gambling platforms. Just last week, the MGCB issued a similar order to BetNow.eu, a site claiming licensure under The Autonomous Island of Anjouan Union of the Comoros. Prior to that, the agency targeted nine other operators, some of which attempted to mask their activities under the pretense of sweepstakes.
In previous enforcement actions, the MGCB has pursued brands such as Bovada and MyBookie, along with sweepstakes-based gaming sites VGW and One Country. Additionally, skill-based gaming provider Papaya Gaming has also faced regulatory scrutiny. The latest round of enforcement underscores the board’s commitment to eliminating unlicensed gambling activity and ensuring that Michigan residents engage with legally sanctioned platforms only.
