Real Money Mobile Video Poker

Real money mobile video poker combines the convenience of mobile gambling with the high-stakes action of slot machines with a skill element, making it a hybrid of complex table poker games and luck-based machine gambling.

All video poker games come with a relatively-low house edge. Some games can even be played in such a way as to give the player a (very small) edge against the house. Getting this advantage requires knowledge of what the best pay tables are and the use of proper game strategy, so it’s not exactly easy money. Still, video poker is roundly considered one of the safest bets in any casino because of the low built-in advantage the casino has against the player.

Playing Video Poker on a Mobile Device

How does playing on a smartphone or tablet compare to playing in a live casino or a traditional desktop gambling website? Video poker translates well to computer displays, thanks to similarities between land-based video poker games and the way bettors interact with online and mobile titles. Sitting in front of a tablet screen is pretty much the same thing as sitting in front of a computer screen. Good news for video poker fans looking for a mobile venue – video poker looks good on mobile Web browsers.

So what’s the catch? Like all online casino games transitioning to mobile, the limitations of mobile tech (and the limitations of bandwidth required to offer the game to customers) mean that the games don’t look quite as good as they do elsewhere. Variety is limited, as is the quality of graphics available. People used to the variety of titles available at a brick and mortar casino may be surprised to find how few different titles they can play on their Android tablet.

Mobile Video Poker Games

The three-game libraries I talk about below are not the only platforms available to fans of mobile video poker, but they do represent a good chunk of the mobile gaming market. The games described below are pretty typical for the entire industry.

Microgaming

Jacks or Better.

I’d like to point out that the graphics on Microgaming’s titles simply looks cheap compared to other big-name game designers. It’s great that Microgaming has experience in mobile design going back to 2004 … I just wish their games didn’t look so much like something you would have seen in the Vegas airport in 1994.

On the plus side, I like that Microgaming makes their titles easy to understand, and they include a complete paytable and instructions page on the game’s help tab. I also like (in some ways) that the paytable is pretty standardized for all of Microgaming’s video poker titles – the top prize is either 4,000 or 5,000 coins on all six of the platform’s titles. It makes the games easier to approach for a newcomer, but maybe a little boring if you already know your way around a game of Aces and Faces. Multiple-hand games (up to 50 at a time) are available.

Playtech

Joker Poker, Deuces Wild, and Bonus Poker. The games look better than Microgaming’s old-school versions, but the variety may not be enough to keep you interested more than a half-hour or so.

BetSoft

BetSoft is one of a very few casino game designers that can still produce what I consider a top-notch game. Unfortunately, not nearly as many casinos license their titles as the other major producers. More BetSoft casinos and mobile-capable sites and apps are available in Europe than any other part of the world, so maybe if I moved across the pond I’d have easier access. Either way, I’m always happy to review their titles, and their releases in the video poker category are as pleasant as I’ve come to expect.

I’m not all that impressed by BetSoft’s total game variety (six at last count), but they do cover what I’d consider to be “the basics:” Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Bonus Deuces Wild, Aces and Eights, Aces and Faces, and Double Double Bonus Poker. I like that BetSoft’s games look and perform much nicer than Microgaming, proving that having more titles isn’t always better.

Real Money Mobile Video Poker Example

Let’s take a look at the real cash video poker game offerings at one popular mobile platform.

Realtime Gaming software and has one of the larger game collections in the mobile industry. Even so, their video poker category includes just three titles at the time of this review – Double Double Bonus Poker, Jacks or Better, and Joker Poker. Multi-hand versions are available for all three, which is a nice touch and adds some variety.

This small number of real money video poker options has more to do with the tastes of the mobile gambling market than anything else. Slots are both easy to produce and extremely popular. Video poker, while a very popular game in land-based casinos, just doesn’t have the same Web-based following that slot games do.

Still, these are functional and fun titles that look really good (on my iPhone X) and play just like the games you may be used to from a land-based casino. RTG does an excellent job translating the traditional video poker machine into a mobile game.
