Not long after the New Jersey Assembly and Senate ed the bill that allows full-scale sports betting in this state, this gambling industry was off to a flying start last Thursday, June 14th, when New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy ceremonially, but also quite officially, posted the first official legal sports wagers in New Jersey!
These being transparent, we know that Murphy put his money on winning the FIFA World Cup in Russia and defending their title from four years ago (dubious, since they just lost to Mexico in their opening game) and New Jersey Devils winning the Stanley Cup in 2019 (too late for this year, Washington Capitals already nicked that one). He placed his wagers at Monmouth Park, the 15 window betting shops venue using William Hill’s sportsbook and the first in NJ to be granted sports betting license.
CEO of William Hill US, Joe Asher, commented on the launch: “We are excited to open for business at Monmouth Park. Obviously, it’s a big day for us. A lot of people have worked really hard for a long time to make today possible and I am grateful for their efforts.”
Ray Lesniak, former State Senator, who had quite the role in sports betting and online gambling legalization in the state, also said: “The racing industry is important to New Jersey. We have more acres of horse farms than any state in the nation. So it’s very important to have this here at Monmouth Park and it’s also very important to save our casinos.”
