Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has launched Red Panda Tails of Wealth, the first online slot game intentionally crafted with accessibility in mind. The initiative is part of OLG’s broader goal to make gaming more inclusive and to demonstrate how accessibility can be built into online entertainment from the ground up.
The new digital slot includes multiple features to players with disabilities, such as screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, a high-contrast color palette for easier visibility, and an accessible heads-up display that can be integrated into future titles.
OLG developed the slot in partnership with Pixiu Gaming, Light & Wonder Spark, and Toronto-based Fable—a company that works with people with disabilities to advise on digital accessibility. According to Andrew Darley, OLG’s Vice President of iCasino and iLottery, the project stemmed from an awareness that a significant portion of the population was being underserved in the online casino space.
Referencing data from Statistics Canada, Darley noted that more than one in four Ontarians identify as having a disability. “That, to me, shows there’s a large market of folks out there who may need some additional sort of when they’re trying these games,” he said. “And we couldn’t find anything out there that was truly designed as an accessible game.”
Although accessibility was central to its design, Red Panda Tails of Wealth doesn’t look or feel different from typical slot games. “The part I love the most about it is that it works well for everyone,” Darley said. “There’s not one population that’s going to have an advantage in enjoyment of this game versus another.”
The development process was comprehensive, with OLG’s in-house research team working closely with individuals with disabilities to understand their gaming preferences and challenges. The final product is intended to deliver an enjoyable and seamless experience for all players, regardless of ability.
While the release of Red Panda Tails of Wealth marks a singular milestone, OLG views it as a catalyst for broader industry change. As Darley explained, “We don’t make the games, but we want the industry to see that this is possible.” He emphasized OLG’s unique role as a government agency in encouraging other developers and operators to prioritize accessibility.
Fable’s Head of Innovation, Kate Kalcevich, echoed this sentiment: “Our mission at Fable is to empower people with disabilities to participate, contribute and shape society – and this is how true accessibility is achieved.”
Pridmore summed up the vision behind the project, stating, “The game is a proof of concept that shows how removing barriers to play can move us towards a more inclusive future in the gaming industry.”
With nearly 28% of Ontarians living with a disability, OLG hopes this launch will spur a shift toward more equitable access across the digital gaming sector.
