South Carolina Tribe to Commence North Carolina Gambling Project

After a long-lasting struggle that took more than six years, a native Indian tribe in South Carolina has received approval for the construction of a casino.
The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has authorized the brand-new project which will stretch over 16 acres of land and allow the Catawba Indian Nation to become more independent. However, the situation for the native Tribe is far from promising, in light of the fact that the land put in trust is not in South Carolina.

The land intended for the Tribal project is situated in casino construction. It directly opposes the decision of DOI and the legal dispute is likely destined to happen.
According to the original plans, Catawba looked to commence with the casino project in South Carolina and put a lot of effort into that idea. The federal government made a radical decision to erase the entire history of the Tribes in 1959, stripping it of its land and negating its existence.
Current Decision
As we already mentioned, the US Department of the Interior (DOI) has reversed the previous decision and allowed Native Tribes to commence with the construction of the casino. It has also granted about $50 million to Catawba in reclaiming its ancestral land. Despite the full right on the casino project, any attempt would activate Cherokee Tribes arguing the Catawba historical rights to the land.
Reacting on DOI decision, the tribe’s chief, Richard Sneed said:
“The federal government has no right or authority to create a new reservation for the Catawba Nation across state lines, into Cherokee historical territory, just to build a casino.”
The Cherokee representatives have even stated that Catawba should “stay in their state”. This claim is contrary to the historical facts which share that Catawba has been inhabiting the area since the mid-1500s and right the region where North and South Carolina used to be one territory, the Province of Carolina. As a reminder, South Carolina become a state in 1776.
The DOI decision is unacceptable for Cherokee and they will do anything to prevent Catawba from the casino idea. However, the Tribe will have to fight against the federal government and the state of North Carolina.
A trio of senators form the state are also ing the idea, including Richard Burr, Thom Tillis, and South Carolina member Lindsey Graham. Bur stated:
“Congress always intended for the Catawba tribe to be able to take land into trust in North Carolina, where they have deep, historic ties. I hope this decision will finally allow the Catawbas to move closer toward their goal of creating jobs and economic development in Kings Mountain with state and local .”
