The Swedish Gaming Authority Announces a Quarter-on-Quarter Incline in Online Gaming Revenue

The Swedish Gaming Authority (Spelinspektionen) revealed the reports for the three months up to the end of September. The stats showed a quarter-on-quarter growth in online gaming revenue for the period but saw a drop in overall market revenue for the same time frame.

The regulator also revealed the exact number of brands holding the approval to offer services in the market. In addition to this, it went public with the number of consumers opting for self-exclusion, where a significant incline was noticed as well.

Turbulent Numbers

Commercial online gambling and wagering, in combination with online gaming on ships in international traffic, brought a total of SEK3.48bn (£281m/€327m/$362m), which represents an increase compared to the previous quarter.

Swedish Tax Agency provided the necessary data…

…and despite Spelinspektionen’s predictions that online gaming revenue would decline quarter-on-quarter in Q3, the result was positive.

During the three-month period, overall gambling revenue came in at SEK5.90bn. This is not only lower than SEK6.11bn in Q2, but it also represents a decline from SEK5.94bn in the first quarter of 2019.

Revenue from state lottery and slot machine games fell 3.2%…

…from SEK1.41bn in Q2 to SEK1.37bn. State casino games revenue, all attributable to Casino Cosmopol, remained level at SEK245m.

Data also displayed a 20.0% decline in revenue from charitable games and national lotteries to SEK740m. However, there was a slight incline in revenue from land-based commercial gaming at restaurant casinos from SEK54m to SEK59m.

More People Opt for Self-Exclusion

The Swedish Gaming Authority also revealed that a total of 41,703 people have signed up to its Spelpaus.se self-exclusion . Comparing with the end of Q2, it’s an increase of up 11.0%. Form the beginning of November, the total number went up to just over 44,000 people.

What comes as a slightly shocking data is…

…that almost half of the people who applied for the self-exclusion are between the ages of 25 and 34. For that reason, numerous institutions, not only in Sweden but on the global level have been putting efforts to protect the younger generations.

Moreover:

The regulator noted that 92 gambling operators are now approved to deliver betting and gaming services to the Swedish market.

Spelinspektionen Revokes Global Gaming’s Certificate

After investigating the case of ten players spending significant sums of money in various Global Gaming brands, The Swedish Gaming Authority discovered that there were no interventions from the operator’s side.

This is just one of the breached rules…

…along with not setting deposit limits, failing to protect clients, questionable behavior regarding bonuses and promotions as well as issues with anti-money laundering policy. The entire spectrum of activities led to the holding company of Global, SafeEnt, is no longer permitted to operate in Sweden.
