Why John Daly Threw $65k Gambling Winnings Off Bridge

Many sports fans know that pro golfer John Daly was once a very reckless gambler, piling up millions of dollars in losses. But it turns out that he could be just as reckless when he won too.

Through an interview on ESPN’s Dan Le Batard Show, Daly said that he became so enraged after a fight with his ex-wife Sherrie that he tossed $65,000 in gambling winnings over a bridge. Not surprisingly, the fight was about his gambling losses.

“I won like 65 grand in the casino, and I said, ‘If you are going to yell and scream at me about this.’ I threw it over the bridge going over to Memphis from Arkansas,” said Daly.

“Threw all the money out the window and said, ‘You know what? If you want that money, you can go find it. But let me tell you something: You don’t have a job. You’re not working. I’m ing you. I’m paying all the bills.’ It’s like that old story of a woman griping at a husband, saying, ‘You know, our lives just aren’t working out very good.’ They’re used to glamorous dinners, and all this stuff.”

To drive home his point, Daly had a friend take her to McDonald’s to show her what eating on a budget would be like.

“So my buddy took her to a McDonald’s drive-thru and got her two cheeseburgers and some french fries and a soda and says, ‘OK, this is how you can live from now on if that’s the way you want it.’” explained Daly.

“And, that’s kind of the point of the story is: We them and pay for everything, but yet, that time Sherrie wasn’t really appreciating what I was doing for her.”

Daly and Sherrie got divorced in 2010, which is the fourth time that Daly has been divorced in his life.

As for the latest gambling story, this is little surprise given that the 5-time PGA Tour champion was willing to dump $65k to make a point.

As we covered before, he estimates losing $98 million through gambling over his lifetime. He also believes he won about $48 million, putting him at $53 million in total losses.

If true, this is an incredible fortune down the drain and one that could’ve grown exponentially if he’d instead made wise investments. But the thing about Daly is that he never seemed to care about money, which is obvious from his lifestyle.

The good thing is that he says he’s cut down on his gambling in recent years.
