UK Government Postpones Casinos Reopening, BGC Sees the Decision as “Deeply Damaging”

The UK’s responsible gambling body The Senet Group plans to hand over all its assets and responsibilities to the new standards body, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC). The decision becomes official starting 8 April 2020, and it is part of the Council’s commitment to promoting safer gambling across the industry.
Following the transfer of the Group’s responsibilities to the Council, MOSES (Multi-Operator Self Exclusion Scheme) will continue as an independent organization. As a small reminder, this scheme allows the public to self-exclude centrally with more than one operator.
Commenting on the announcement, Gillian Wilmot, Senet Chairman, said:
“The collaborative ethos at the heart of the new Betting and Gaming Council now offers the opportunity to combine resources to deliver safer gambling initiatives at scale. It is vital that the industry is at the core of solutions to protect its customers. Senet’s role in bringing the industry together and leading initiatives to protect its customers and secure its own sustainable future has added significant value.”
Since its establishment in September 2014, Senet has been actively working on upgrading and maintaining high gambling standards. Created by four leading high-street bookmakers, the institution is also in charge of the MOSES retail self-exclusion scheme and the ‘When the Fun Stops Stop’ player messaging campaigns.
In April 2019…
…the Group began a cross-industry cooperation project to develop an ambitious program of industry reform. Among the major concerns to deal with, the impact of gambling on vulnerable people takes the higher position.
Senet has been expanding its hip to include many of the leading online brands and land-based gambling operators. It plays a key role in the industry’s adoption of voluntary practices which have made gambling safer and fairer.
Endorsed by all of the Council, the resulting package of Safer Gambling Commitments was announced by the BGC in November 2019.
As part of their commitment to safer gambling…
…BGC have already presented a ‘whistle to whistle’ ban on advertising during live sport. Moreover, they substantially increased funding for research, education, and treatment, implemented new ID and age-verification checks and terminated any exclusive rights to screen FA Cup games.
As for the plans, they will enforce a ban on betting with credit cards.
Brigid Simmonds, Chairman of the BGC, also shared some thoughts on the announcement:
“The cross-industry collaborative approach pioneered by Senet became a blueprint which made the creation of the new Betting and Gaming Council possible. I would like to thank the Senet board, headed by Gillian Wilmot, and the team led by Sarah Hanratty for their hard work, dedication and the legacy they leave through the Safer Gambling Commitments, which provide a roap for raising standards across our industry. We look forward to building on that work.”

I’m glad there are so many institutions putting plenty of effort to keep this industry safer.
