Denmark's Online Gambling Market Revenue Increases

The regulated gambling market in Denmark has almost set a new record high in revenue in the third quarter of 2018. This is not to surprising considering the well-developed online sector which deserves most of the praise…

while the land-based gaming set record low returns!

Denmark’s regulatory agency released the numbers on Wednesday and displayed that the overall gaming revenue reached DKK1.624 billion (US $247 million) in Q3 of 2018. Compared to the same period in 2017 when the profit was DKK1.48 billion, this is quite an improvement.

However, there has been a small decrease when we look at the numbers from the second quarter of 2018, but nothing significant.

Distributing Roles

Online casinos are the ones that carry the torch and they contributed significantly to the figures. The online casino revenue in the third quarter of 2018 hit…

…DKK544.7 million, which is almost a one quarter higher than in the same period last year.

This is a record-breaking figure for the online casinos in this country and a new high since the market was liberalized in 2012. The highest share of the profits is brought by blackjack with 14 and 11.7 percent respectively.

It is important to mention “multi-player commission games” that for DKK35.9 million of the total casino revenue. Poker and bingo which are included in this category made some fluctuations but there hasn’t been any significant change. Poker revenue was slightly up compared to the second quarter, whereas bingo went down.

Device Diversity

As more and more players seek online action, many are still using the traditional websites. In recent years, the providers started offering games on their mobile phones and it comes to no surprise…

…to learn that the mobile’s share of the pie continues to rise.

The mobile’s share of the online casino revenue was 32.5 percent, which is a 2.5 percent increase since October last year.

Wagering Numbers

The wagering remains more or less unchanged with only a modest 0.8% gain from Q2 reaching the total of DKK655.3 million. The Danish regulatory agency has added horse race betting to this category since the second quarter this year.

Furthermore, FIFA World Cup took place in the summer this year and that also s for the yearly improvement.

And even here, when it comes to wagering, mobile channels claimed more than half of the revenue!

What else is happening in Denmark?

Swedish betting and gambling institution Bethard crossed the border earlier this year and entered the Danish market. Therefore, players from Denmark were allowed to and play on the company’s website without any issues.

Just several days before, Realistic Games also reached the Scandinavian country thanks to the agreement with bet365. Two brands will work together to provide the best service possible to the gambling enthusiasts in Denmark.
