The German Bundesliga football club, Hertha Berlin, has acquired its new commercial partner – the online gambling operator, Betway.
The deal, with the possibility of extension, will run until the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.
Betway will thus become football club’s official sports betting partner…
…and will have its branding placed inside Berlin team’s home stadium, Olympiastadion, on the electronic advertising boards.
Betway’s CEO, Anthony Werkman, has said that “we are looking forward to having increased brand awareness among German fans thanks to our recent work with clubs in ’s top two divisions. We have seized a unique opportunity to work with a club steeped in so much tradition.”
Ingo Schiller, Hertha’s financial director, added:
“Betway has already proven itself to be a reliable partner through many years of involvement in the sports market. In the current uncertain climate, we recognise the value of such stability.”
Betway has secured similar deals with tho Spanish top flight (La Liga) teams – Celta Vigo and Real Betis.
The company has also renewed their sponsorship with Leganes FC which plays in Spain’s second division.
In March…
…Betway was fined GBP 11.6 million for failings regarding social responsibility.
They have failed to identify the source of funds of a VIP customer who deposited 8 million and lost 4 million pounds over four years.
Also, Betway didn’t comply with effective social responsibility interactions who deposited and lost GBP 187,000 in two days.
Prior to that, in January…
…Betway’s ad featuring West Ham FC ace Declan Rice was banned by the Advertising Standards Agency.
The young England football star’s ad was in breach of the CAP Code.
ASA issued the following statement:
“We noted that the YouTube video appeared on the Betway YouTube channel and featured sportsmen who consumers would be able to place bets on in the future and wearing football shirts with a prominent Betway logo.”

Bundesliga rules. Good deal for both, I’d say.
