Opened in 1996, Las Vegas’ Monte Carlo Resort and Casino has been a fixture on the Vegas Strip for two decades. But this piece of Sin City history will soon be gone when Monte Carlo is split into two new hotels.
Owner MGM International is going to pour $450 million into the transformation, which will result in the 2,700-room Park MGM resort and the 292-room NoMad resort.
MGM is following a trend that’s become popular in Vegas recently, where companies create one large hotel resort coupled with a smaller, fancier resort.
NoMad will be the latter in this case, with a dedicated drop-off lobby, restaurant by famed Chef Daniel Humm, giant swimming pool and luxury suites.
The Park MGM hotel won’t be shabby either since it’ll be decorated with a total Italian theme, from the cafes to the shops. Forbes reports that the idea is to target younger people who want a unique, cultural experience from their resort stay. The new hotel will retain some of Monte Carlo’s European influence, but the vibe will be more modern along with upgraded suites.
Besides its overhaul, Park MGM will benefit from being adjacent to MGM’s outdoor space called The Park, which features a 5,300-seat entertainment venue, indoor and outdoor bars, sculptures, rugged Nevada landscape and water attractions.
As for the Monte Carlo, this casino resorth has been lauded for its ideal Vegas Strip location, good prices and European décor. It’s also known for having a smaller boutique resort called Hotel 32, which offers unique outdoor dining experiences. Unfortunately, Monte Carlo never truly competed with the biggest resorts on the strip like Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and the Venetian. MGM’s hope is that they’ll revitalize the property with the new MGM Park and NoMad resorts.
When MGM finishes the Park and MGM hotels, they’ll have completed their “neighborhood” overhaul of the central Vegas Strip area. This redevelopment project started in 2009 with the CityCenter, a 76-acre property that features the 4,000-room Aria, 5-star Mandarin Oriental, Crystals luxury shopping mall, 1,500-room Vdara and numerous art works.
Park MGM and NoMad will be the latest additions to this movement, and they’ll be open in 2018. After these hotels are completed, it’s unclear if MGM will continue working on the central strip area, or will have completed their efforts.
