There is a good prospect of sports-betting and online gambling legalization within the borders of the state of Rhode Island – there is a legislative proposal at hand that would alleviate some ongoing budget issues for the state.
Rhode Island, home to a mere one million inhabitants, would thus mimic the undertakings already in place in the states of Nevada, with Pennsylvania next in line to officially commence their program. Should online gambling and sports-betting become legal in the state, it would then tax the operators and put the financial surplus in its . These funds can then be used for various instances where investment is needed.
Nick Mattiello, Rhode Island Speaker of the House, commented that the state will wait for the US Supreme Court to issue a ruling to legalize sportsbetting in New Jersey – and in the likely event of this happening, he would be very interested in similar legislation for Rhode Island: “Many details would have to be worked out as to where the betting would take place, but I am certainly open to the possibilities here and would work with the Lottery Commission to make sure it is done appropriately. Depending on the timing of the Supreme Court ruling, I don’t know if this could be in place for the next fiscal year’s budget.”
There is still no date set when the official preposition for this law will take place, but we will keep you updated with any further development of this story.
