Sports Betting Revenue in Pennsylvania Reaches New Heights in September

According to the most recent statistics released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), the revenue for September increased significantly over the previous month of August. As far as the reports show, overall revenue derived through retail and online sportsbooks totaled $14,888,872, or 143.5% above revenue of $6,115,016 in August.

Handle (amount wagered) through retail and online sportsbooks totaled $194,504,622 in September. Compared to $109,038,051 in August, these figures represent a 78.4% increase. Online casino game gross revenue totaled $4,135,358 during September, a 20.6% increase over the August 2019 revenue total of $3,428,640.

Valley Forge as Top Contributor

During September of this year, overall gaming revenue in the state from all sectors was 3.90% above the revenue generated in September 2018.

Sources that now contribute to revenue include slot machines…

…table games, internet gaming, retail and internet sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals. Those to acquire the biggest amounts were:

  • Valley Forge Casino Resort with a total handle of $88,546,350, and overall revenue of $5,113,222
  • SugarHouse Casino with a total handle of $37,718,490, and overall revenue of $2,900,092
  • Parx Casino with total handle of $21,095,923, and overall revenue of $2,396,453

Sports wagering revenue reports that figures for Mount Airy Casino Resort and Mohegan Sun Pocono are for a partial month since each launched sports wagering during September.

Slot Machine in Slight Year-on-Year Fall

September’s gross revenue from slot machines at the 12 casinos in Pennsylvania

… was $188,376,961. The reported figures represent a 4% decrease in revenue when compared to the $196,209,618 generated in the same month last year. Tax revenue from the play of one-armed bandits in September of this year was $96,886,088.

In September 2018, the average number of slots operating daily was 25,471 at the casinos. This year in September, the number declined to 23,154.

Parx Casino was the leader in this sector…

…with $33,900,322 for September this year, but a miniature drop of -0.02% compared to the same month previous year, when the venue collected $33,908,479.

Following Parx was Rivers Casino where the revenue was $24,489,442. The numbers went 6.50% up, compared to the previous year where the venue collected $22,995,461 in September.

Minor Drop in Table Games

Table games revenue for September 2019 was $70,608,678, which is a decrease of 2.35% over the same month of last year. During that period, the revenue was $72,310,207.

Overall tax revenue from table games play during September was $11,345,069…

…with an average of 1,269 tables in daily operation statewide. The difference is practically non-existent, compared to 1,281 tables in operation the same month last year.

Wind Creek Bethlehem led the way with $18,356,830, which is a drop of 0.36% compared to $18,422,996 from the previous year. Parx was the next contributor, with an increase of 1.67%. September this year brought $15,532,741, whereas the revenue for the previous one was $15,277,093.
